Shimla, Jan 1
After a brief respite from the cold, Himachal Pradesh is bracing for another round of inclement weather. The Meteorological Department has issued an alert for heavy rain and snowfall in the state on January 5th and 6th.
Following a period of clear weather on New Year’s Day, a fresh Western Disturbance is expected to become active from January 2nd. This system is likely to bring widespread rain and snowfall across the state, particularly in higher reaches.
“After the rains, the mountains are shivering with cold,” stated an official from the Meteorological Department. “The mercury in Tabo reached a record low of minus 17 degrees on Tuesday.”
While the initial impact of the system may be felt from January 2nd onwards, the heaviest precipitation is anticipated on January 5th and 6th.
“There is a forecast of rain and snowfall at many places during this period,” the official added.
This renewed spell of wet weather comes after a period of relatively milder conditions in some parts of the state. However, the cold wave continues to grip many areas, particularly in higher elevations.
“138 roads are still closed after snowfall in Kullu and Lahaul districts,” another official informed. “These include two highways of Kullu and two other roads.”
The Meteorological Department has advised residents to take necessary precautions and remain vigilant in the face of the impending weather system.
