Shimla, Jan 14,
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Alert for Himachal Pradesh, predicting scattered to fairly widespread precipitation from the late night of January 15 to the late night of January 16, 2025. The forecast highlights the likelihood of light to moderate snowfall in many mid and high-altitude regions, including popular tourist destinations such as Naldehra, Manali, Shimla City, Kufri, Narkanda, Solang Valley, and Sissu. Low hills and plains are also expected to receive light to moderate rainfall.
The weather system driving these changes includes a Western Disturbance located over Iran and neighboring regions, observed at altitudes of 3.1 to 7.6 km above mean sea level. Additionally, a subtropical westerly jet stream with core winds of up to 110 knots at 12.6 km above mean sea level is impacting the weather across North India. Dense fog and ground frost conditions are also likely to prevail in isolated parts of the state during the late night and early morning hours of January 14 and 15.
The IMD warns of potential impacts, including slippery roads leading to vehicle skidding and collisions, traffic congestion, and disruptions to essential services. Residents and visitors are advised to drive cautiously, limit outdoor activities during this period, and follow state government advisories to ensure safety.
Temperature trends suggest a temporary rise in maximum temperatures by 2–4°C over the next 24 hours, followed by a sharp drop of 4–5°C from January 16 onward. Minimum temperatures in the mid and high hills are likely to decrease gradually by 2–4°C over the next few days. Travelers and residents should remain vigilant and plan activities accordingly to mitigate the impacts of adverse weather conditions.
