Shimla, July 19
The Hindustan-Tibet National Highway (NH-5) is temporarily closed to night traffic at the Nigulsari landslide point due to the risk of shooting stones.
Dr. Amit Kumar Sharma, the District Magistrate of Kinnaur, issued an immediate road closure order for NH-5 from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM daily, starting July 18, 2024. This decision follows a proposal from the Sub-Divisional Magistrate in Nichar, highlighting the ongoing danger of continuous shooting stones in the area.
Enacted under sections 115 and 116 of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988, the closure aims to ensure public safety by preventing vehicular traffic during hazardous hours. NH-5 is a critical route for Kinnaur, connecting the region to major hubs, and any disruption significantly impacts local mobility and logistics.
Safety Measures and Traffic Management
The Superintendent of Police in Kinnaur has been instructed to deploy adequate force to manage traffic flow outside closure hours and prioritize emergency movements. Additionally, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Nichar at Bhawanagar is tasked with enhancing safety measures along the affected road section. This includes installing proper lighting and safety support ropes or posts along the alternate walking pathway through Tranda Village Road to ensure safe passage during the night.
**Impact on Local Community and Travelers**
Continuous shooting stones at the Nigulsari landslide point have long been a concern for both locals and travelers. The highway is vital for residents of Kinnaur, providing access to essential services and connectivity with the rest of the state. While necessary for safety, the closure will likely cause inconvenience and delays. However, the administration’s swift action and precautionary measures reflect a commitment to minimizing risk and ensuring public well-being.
Emergency and Public Awareness
Emergency arrangements are in place to ensure that medical and other urgent movements receive priority. Clear signage and barriers will be installed to guide and inform travelers about the closure and alternate routes.
The District Public Relations Officer (DPRO) Kinnaur is responsible for disseminating this information widely through print and electronic media to keep the public informed. The Regional Manager of the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) in Reckong Peo has also been directed to adjust bus schedules in accordance with the new traffic regulations.
While the road closure on NH-5 at Nigulsari landslide point may pose short-term challenges, it underscores the administration’s proactive approach to ensuring public safety in the face of natural hazards. Travelers and locals are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and stay updated with the latest information from official sources.
For further updates, travelers can refer to notices on public boards and information disseminated by the DPRO Kinnaur.
