Apple so far is the most important fruit crop of the state which constitutes of 49% of the total area under fruit crops and 85% of the total fruit production. Area under apple has increased from 400hectares in 1950-51 to 3025 hectares in 1960-61 to 1, 11,896 hectares in 2016-17. Even that the area under other temperate fruits has increased too from 900 hectares in 1960-61 to 28163 hectares in 2016-17, but is not enough to keep a smooth progress graph of horticulture in the state, shows studies. Nuts and dry fruits increased from 231 hectares to 10364 hectares. Similarly citrus fruits and other sub tropical fruits increased from 1225 hectares to 52304 hectares.
Horticulture largely depends on the weather conditions, therefore the pace of development is largely jeopardized due to erotic apple production, says the economic survey 2018.” It is necessary to explore and harness the vast horticulture potential of the state through diversified horticulture production in varied agro-ecological zones,” states the survey. The survey states that advent of WTO, GATT and liberalization of economy is further imposing many challenges on dominance of apple in the fruit industry. It says fluctuation in production of apple in previous few years has attracted the attention of the state government too.
