HPU Campus Violence Protest After Knife Attack, SFI Marches from University Gate to Law Department
Shimla, March 10,
The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) unit of Students’ Federation of India at Himachal Pradesh University on Tuesday held a protest rally on the university campus, raising concerns over increasing drug abuse and incidents of violence among students.
The rally was taken out from the university gate to the Law Department, where students gathered and questioned the effectiveness of the campus security system. SFI leaders alleged that the university campus has increasingly become vulnerable to drug abuse and violent incidents, and accused the administration of failing to take adequate preventive measures.
Protest follows stabbing incident on campus
The demonstration came a day after a violent clash was reported near the Law Faculty of the university. A student was injured in a knife attack during an altercation between two groups on Monday afternoon. Police later arrested a law student in connection with the incident and registered a case under provisions related to attempted murder and criminal intimidation. The injured student was admitted to Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital, where his condition was reported to be stable.
According to police officials, the accused allegedly pulled out a knife during an argument and stabbed the victim in the stomach, triggering panic in the campus area.
SFI alleges security failure
Addressing the protest, SFI campus secretary Mukesh said the university administration has failed to curb the growing menace of drugs within the campus.
He alleged that people addicted to drugs frequently enter the university premises and are involved in disruptive activities. “Despite repeated incidents, the administration has not taken concrete steps to strengthen campus security,” he said.
Mukesh also referred to the stabbing incident, claiming that the attack occurred despite the presence of security personnel and highlighted serious lapses in the university’s safety mechanism.
SFI campus president Yogi called upon students to unite against what he described as rising hooliganism in the university. He said students must collectively raise their voice for safety and basic campus facilities.
