Shimla, Jan 18,
The Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) has achieved a remarkable milestone by generating ₹5.91 crore through its pioneering vehicle scrapping initiatives. By leveraging the Metal Scrap Trade Corporation (MSTC) Scrapping Portal, HRTC has successfully conducted e-auctions of end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) and unserviceable materials, setting a benchmark for public sector enterprises in the state, according to Managing Director, HRTC, Rohan Chand Thakur.
Thakur informed that HRTC, the first organization in Himachal Pradesh to implement the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) directives, registered on the MSTC portal in July 2023. The MoRTH notifications dated December 17, 2022, and January 16, 2023, mandate that all government vehicles older than 15 years must be e-auctioned through Registered Vehicles Scrapping Facilities (RVSF).
In its initial e-auctions conducted in October and November 2023, and February 2024, HRTC sold 163 ELVs, including 124 buses, 26 light vehicles, one crane, five trucks, six tankers, and one exhibition van, generating ₹2.84 crore. The initiative gained further momentum in January 2025, when another e-auction saw 90 of the 114 listed vehicles, including 101 buses, eight light vehicles, a truck, an exhibition van, and three auto-rickshaws, sold for ₹1.55 crore.
Additionally, in December 2024, HRTC auctioned unserviceable tyres, tubes, and flaps, adding ₹1.52 crore to its revenue. Thakur highlighted that ₹38.84 lakh from this auction has already been realized, with the remaining amount to be collected upon approval from the Head Office.
“This initiative demonstrates our commitment to sustainable practices and efficient resource management,” Thakur said, adding that HRTC is also assisting other government departments in adopting vehicle scrapping policies.
By leading the way in implementing vehicle scrapping directives, HRTC has not only ensured compliance with national policies but also contributed significantly to environmental sustainability and resource optimization.
