Shimla, Nov 30,
The Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) withdrew its explanation notice issued to the driver and conductor of bus number HP-63C-5134 operating on the Shimla-Sanjauli route. The notice followed a complaint from Samuel Prakash, alleging that an audio clip critical of prominent political leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, Mamata Banerjee, and Tejashwi Yadav, was played at a loud volume on the corporation bus.
The complainant had raised concerns through the Chief Minister’s Office, claiming the audio program, featuring a conversation with religious overtones, amounted to public propaganda in a government vehicle. The HRTC initiated a probe, issuing notices to the bus crew on November 5, 2024, demanding an explanation.
In their responses, the driver and conductor denied any such activity, asserting that no audio was played on the bus. A preliminary investigation by the HRTC also found no supporting evidence in the complaint. Subsequently, the regional office’s initial clarification was rescinded, and the case was closed.
HRTC Sub-Divisional Manager clarified that the investigation did not substantiate the allegations, rendering any further action unwarranted. This decision brought relief to the accused staff members but also raised questions about the complaint’s authenticity and intent.
The controversy gained political traction, with some parties alleging misuse of government machinery to target public servants. The opposition criticized the state government, accusing it of undue interference to appease certain political factions.
While the case was resolved in favor of the bus staff, it sparked a debate on maintaining neutrality in public services and avoiding undue politicization of minor administrative matters.
