The HydroMet unit in New Delhi has issued a red alert, indicating a Persistent Flash Flood Threat (PFFT) until 1730 IST on August 1, 2024. This alert warns of potential surface runoff and inundation in areas with fully saturated soils and low-lying regions due to the expected rainfall over the next six hours.
The regions most at risk include the Kangra, Hamirpur, Sirmour districts, and parts of Mandi district, which have been highlighted as high-risk monsoon areas. In a press release, the HydroMet unit stated that a moderate flash flood threat is also likely in several watersheds and neighborhoods within Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, and Sirmaur districts in Himachal Pradesh over the next six hours.
Recorded Rainfall in the Last 24 Hours
Significant rainfall has been recorded in the past 24 hours across various locations. Palampur in Kangra received 212 mm, Jogindernagar in Mandi recorded 161 mm, Dharamshala measured 183 mm, Baijnath observed 135 mm, Sujanpur Tira saw 142 mm, Nadaun in Hamirpur reported 103.5 mm, Paonta in Sirmour recorded 121.2 mm
Additionally, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported excessive rainfall and thunderstorms in Sundernagar, Shimla, Bhuntar, Jot of Kullu, and Kangra over the past 24 hours.
The IMD has also issued an orange alert for several locations in Himachal Pradesh, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall for today.
Residents in these areas are advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety during this period of severe weather.
