IIT Mandi ragging matter: action taken against 72 students

Indian Institute of Technology Mandi (IIT Mandi) is making headlines as it swiftly responds to a shocking incident of ragging that occurred during a recent fresher mixer party on campus. In a press statement released on Wednesday, IIT Mandi addressed the issue and outlined the actions taken to ensure a safe and harassment-free environment for all students.
Known for its robust Anti-Ragging Policy, IIT Mandi wasted no time in tackling this disturbing incident. A dedicated committee was immediately set up to investigate the matter, ensuring that due process was followed at every step, stated the media communiqué.
The institute’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of its students is evident in the disciplinary actions taken against the individuals involved in the ragging incident. A total of 72 students are now facing consequences for their actions.
Some students are being fined Rs. 15,000 along with a requirement to complete 20 hours of community service, sending a clear message that such behaviour will not be tolerated. Others have been handed more severe penalties, facing fines of Rs. 20,000 and an additional requirement of 40 hours of community service, reflecting the gravity of their involvement in the incident.
In the most severe cases, a fine of Rs. 25,000 and a demanding 60 hours of community service have been imposed, underscoring the institute’s zero-tolerance stance, they stated.
Also, taking the strictest action, IIT Mandi has suspended 10 students from both academic and hostel facilities, with the suspension set to endure until December 2023.
