Himachal Pradesh Health Department has initiated a comprehensive surveillance and awareness drive after jaundice cases were reported from parts of Kullu district, raising concerns over the spread of the water-borne disease.
Officials said medical teams have been sent to the affected localities to conduct door-to-door health checks, identify suspected patients and collect water samples for laboratory testing. The investigation is aimed at determining the exact source of the infection while ensuring that timely treatment is provided to those affected.
Preliminary findings indicate that contaminated drinking water may have contributed to the outbreak, although officials said confirmation will depend on the laboratory analysis. The Jal Shakti Department has been asked to inspect water supply schemes, disinfect reservoirs and strengthen chlorination to prevent further transmission.
The district administration has appealed to residents to remain vigilant rather than panic. People have been advised to consume boiled or purified drinking water, maintain personal hygiene, avoid food prepared under unhygienic conditions and immediately visit the nearest health centre if they develop symptoms such as fever, weakness, nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, yellowing of the eyes or skin, or dark urine.

Health workers are also conducting awareness campaigns in villages and urban areas, informing residents about preventive measures and the importance of early diagnosis. Sanitation drives have been intensified in vulnerable pockets to minimise the risk of further infections.
Officials said government hospitals and primary health centres have been directed to keep adequate stocks of medicines and diagnostic facilities ready. The Health Department is monitoring the situation on a daily basis and has urged the public to cooperate with surveillance teams by promptly reporting suspected cases.
The administration expressed confidence that with timely intervention, strict monitoring and community participation, the outbreak can be contained and the risk of further spread significantly reduced.
