Shimla, Sept 25,
BJP MP Kangana Ranaut on Wednesday withdrew her controversial remarks calling for the reinstatement of the three farm laws that were repealed in 2021. Clarifying that her views were personal and did not represent her party’s stance, Ranaut expressed regret for her earlier statement, acknowledging that it may have disappointed many.
In a video posted on X (formerly Twitter), Ranaut emphasized that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had withdrawn the farm laws with “great sensitivity and sympathy.” She retracted her words, noting, “I regret if I left anybody disappointed with my words and opinions. I take my words back.”
The Himachal Pradesh BJP distanced itself from her comments, and BJP national spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill criticized her statements, asserting that they undermined the positive work done by the Prime Minister for the farmers of Punjab and the Sikh community. Shergill stressed that the PM’s relationship with farmers should not be judged by one MP’s irresponsible remarks.
Ranaut’s comments came at a politically sensitive time, with Haryana assembly elections approaching. The Congress party alleged that her remarks signaled the ruling party’s intentions to revive the controversial laws, sparking protests and demands for the implementation of a minimum support price (MSP) policy. Many viewed her retraction as a strategic move to control the damage ahead of the elections.
