Shimla, Sept 1,
Himachal Pradesh is witnessed above-normal 72 percent rainfall in August 2025, with several districts recording precipitation levels nearly double the long-term average, according to official data.
The state as a whole registered 440.8 mm rainfall against the normal 256.8 mm, marking a 72% excess. Almost all districts reported higher-than-usual precipitation, with Kullu (162%), Shimla (126%), Solan (118%), Una (121%) and Chamba (104%) emerging as the most rain-surplus regions.
District-wise data reveals sharp deviations. Bilaspur received 598.7 mm against the normal 316.8 mm (89% higher), while Hamirpur recorded 622.1 mm compared to 400.6 mm (55% excess). Mandi also saw heavy showers at 681.5 mm, nearly 72% above normal.
In contrast, the rain-shadow areas of Lahaul-Spiti (26% surplus) and Kangra (29% surplus) reported relatively modest deviations, though still above average. Kinnaur, typically drier, saw 140.5 mm rainfall — an 81% rise over the norm.
Officials noted that the consistent spell of heavy downpours triggered widespread landslides, road blockages, and crop damage in several regions, while also replenishing water sources and improving soil moisture for late sowing crops.
The erratic pattern of rainfall, though beneficial for reservoirs and agriculture in parts, has also heightened concerns over disaster preparedness as fragile hill slopes struggled to withstand the pressure of torrential showers.
With the monsoon season entering its final phase, experts suggest that cumulative excess rainfall could influence September weather patterns and water availability in the post-monsoon period.
