Shimla, Dec 3,
Himachal Pradesh is bracing for a warmer and drier winter season, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This could lead to potential water shortages in the upcoming summer, especially in regions reliant on snowmelt.
Both minimum and maximum temperatures are forecast to be above normal across most parts of the state from December 2024 to February 2025. This translates to fewer cold wave days, particularly in the plains and lower hills. However, higher-altitude regions like Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, Kangra, and Una might still experience occasional cold spells.
The most significant concern is the below-normal rainfall prediction, particularly reduced snowfall, which could impact water levels in rivers and reservoirs. This could affect agriculture, hydropower generation, and domestic water supply.
Less snowfall in the higher reaches will directly impact the state’s water resources, as snowmelt is a crucial source of water for many regions. Also higher temperatures can lead to increased evaporation, further exacerbating water scarcity. Reduced snowfall and warmer temperatures can even affect winter crops, particularly those requiring specific cold conditions like apple. Even hydropower Generation and domestic Water Supply might get effected due to lesser precipitataion.
The IMD advises residents and authorities to stay updated on weather forecasts and take necessary precautions to minimize the adverse impacts of the predicted weather conditions.
