Shimla, March 7,
Himachal Pradesh is bracing for an unusually warm spring season, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting above-normal temperatures and an increased likelihood of heatwave days from March to May 2025. The seasonal outlook suggests a significant rise in both maximum and minimum temperatures across most parts of the state, raising concerns about heat-related risks, especially in the low and mid-hill regions.

According to the IMD, there is a 65-75% probability that maximum temperatures will remain above normal, while minimum temperatures are also expected to exceed the usual range with a 55-65% probability. This indicates warmer days and nights ahead, potentially leading to prolonged heat stress for residents.
The low hills, plains, and mid-hill areas face a 55-65% rise in heatwave days, though higher-altitude regions are expected to experience fewer heatwave events, with probabilities staying below 20-30% due to their naturally cooler climate.
The March 2025 outlook aligns with this trend, with a 70-85% probability of above-normal maximum temperatures and a 45-55% likelihood of higher-than-normal minimum temperatures. However, heatwave occurrences in March may remain 10-20% lower than the long-term average, offering brief relief before temperatures climb further in April and May. Adding to these challenges, the IMD has predicted a 45-55% chance of below-normal rainfall in March, which could worsen dry conditions and heighten the risk of both heatwaves and water shortages.
With the state heading into an unusually warm and potentially dry season, residents and authorities are urged to take necessary precautions to mitigate heat-related health risks and prepare for possible water scarcity in the months ahead.
