Chandigarh/Solan, Aug 2,
Four Himachal Pradesh police personnel, including a sub-inspector, have been suspended after a video surfaced online showing them purchasing liquor while in uniform and loading it into a government vehicle in Chandigarh. The incident occurred while they were deployed for Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s escort duty.
The viral video sparked outrage on social media, prompting an immediate probe ordered by Solan Superintendent of Police Gaurav Singh. “The video was found to be genuine during the investigation. Consequently, all four personnel involved, including the sub-inspector, have been suspended, and a departmental inquiry has been initiated,” confirmed SP Gaurav Singh.
According to sources, the incident took place on Friday when CM Sukhu was scheduled to fly to Delhi from Shimla by helicopter. However, adverse weather conditions grounded the chopper, forcing the Chief Minister to travel to Chandigarh by road. The four suspended personnel from Solan district had traveled ahead in a black Scorpio to provide escort support.
After the CM’s convoy reached Chandigarh and he proceeded towards Delhi, the police team reportedly stopped at a liquor shop on their return journey. In uniform and using the official vehicle, they were caught on video buying a box of liquor and placing it in the vehicle, triggering questions over discipline and misuse of authority.
The incident has raised concerns over protocol violations and ethical conduct among personnel deployed for high-security duties. The police department’s swift response to suspend the erring officers underscores the seriousness of the matter.
The state government and police officials have yet to issue an official statement on whether further disciplinary action or policy review is being considered to prevent such breaches in the future.
