Shimla, July 23,
The Dhalli-Kaithlighat four-lane construction project has reached a significant milestone with the completion of a 708-meter-long tunnel at Shungal near Shoghi. This crucial development is expected to ease traffic congestion and reduce travel time in Shimla.
The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is overseeing this ambitious project, which includes the construction of ten tunnels over a 10-kilometer stretch between Kaithlighat and Dhalli. The tunnel at Shungal, which began construction in 2023, was recently completed with a breakthrough ceremony led by Abdul Basit, the Regional Officer of NHAI Himachal Pradesh.
Abdul Basit praised the efforts of the 200 laborers and 50 machines that worked around the clock to finish the tunnel. This double-lane tunnel is designed to streamline traffic flow, cutting down on travel time and fuel usage. The construction was carried out with a strong emphasis on environmental conservation, avoiding the cutting of hills and approximately 5,000 trees to preserve the natural landscape.
The four-lane expansion, stretching from Parwanoo to Kaithlighat and Dhalli, is set to revolutionize the traffic pattern between Shimla and Chandigarh. The new road will reduce the distance between Kaithlighat and Dhalli from 40 kilometers to 28.5 kilometers, significantly improving connectivity and travel efficiency.
The project is divided into two phases, with the remaining nine tunnels expected to be completed by December 2026. This development highlights NHAI’s dedication to modernizing infrastructure, promising substantial benefits for both local residents and travelers.
Abdul Basit expressed confidence in the positive impact of the project, noting that the improved road network will not only save time and fuel but also support sustainable development. This initiative marks a significant step in tackling traffic issues and promoting economic growth in the region.
