Shimla, June 20
Himachal Pradesh experienced significant relief from a prolonged dry spell and drought conditions on Wednesday as thunderstorms brought much-needed rain to the region.
Reports indicate that numerous locations across the state were hit by hailstorms, rain, and winds gusting between 30 to 40 km/h, along with lightning. This weather event caused a substantial drop in temperatures, which had previously soared between 40 to 44 degrees Celsius in many areas, alleviating the intense heatwave that had persisted for over two and a half months.
The highest recorded temperature was in Una at 44 degrees Celsius, followed by Bilaspur at 41.8 degrees, Dhaulakuan in Sirmour district at 41.5 degrees, Hamirpur at 41.3 degrees, and Kangra at 41 degrees. Other notable temperatures included Berthin in Hamirpur and Sundernagar in Mandi at 40.6 degrees.
In the cooler regions, Shimla recorded a maximum temperature of 29.5 degrees, Dharamshala 31.5, Nahan in Sirmour 37.5, Solan 36, and Mandi 39 degrees. Additionally, temperatures at Jubberhatti airport reached 34.2 degrees, Chamba 39.7, Dalhousie 23.3, Manali 28.3, Kufri 24.2, and Narkanda 25.7 degrees.
The districts of Shimla, Solan, Hamirpur, Sirmour, Mandi, and Bilaspur experienced thundershowers, lightning, hailstorms, and gusty winds from 17:30 until 20:00 hours.
Forecasts suggest that thundershowers, lightning, hailstorms, and gusty winds are likely to affect parts of Solan, Bilaspur, Shimla, and Mandi in the coming days. Light precipitation accompanied by thunderstorms is also expected at isolated locations in Kangra, Chamba, Sirmour, Kinnaur, Una, Lahaul-Spiti, and Kullu.
The sky remains overcast even on Thursday as chances of light rain are predicted
