A 22-year-old man suffered grievous injuries, including the loss of four fingers on his right hand, after a sudden explosion atop a bike repair shop in Barsar town of Hamirpur district on Friday. The injured youth, identified as Atul from Chhaproh, was rushed to the Civil Hospital Barsar and later referred to PGI Chandigarh owing to his critical condition.
The blast occurred while Atul was working on the shop’s tin roof. The explosion was so loud and abrupt that it sent shockwaves through the busy market area, leaving locals startled. Eyewitnesses said three people were on the rooftop when the blast occurred, but two of them reportedly fled the scene immediately.
Police teams have begun scanning nearby CCTV footage to identify the missing individuals. Officers at the site collected debris samples and other materials as part of the forensic examination.
Though Atul told the police that Diwali firecrackers triggered the explosion, the circumstances at the scene have raised doubts. “The nature of the blast and the injuries sustained point to possibilities beyond ordinary firecrackers,” a police official said, indicating that the angle of illegal explosive material or manufacturing is also under scrutiny.
DSP Lalman confirmed the incident and said a case under explosion-related provisions has been registered. “Every angle is being investigated. We are verifying the youth’s statement, but we are also probing the possibility of explosive substance handling or preparation. If confirmed, identifying the source of such material will be crucial,” he said.
Locals described the explosion as the first of its kind in Hamirpur district, further deepening the mystery around the incident.
Police have intensified efforts to trace the two individuals believed to have been present at the time of the blast.
