Reckong Peo, June 14
When the state is reeling in perching and sizzling heatwave conditions State authority are for-seeing another violent monsoon season and bracing itself to cope up with the unprecedented heavy rainfall and flash floods.
The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Kinnaur organized a comprehensive mega mock drill at Reckong Peo, the headquarters of Kinnaur district on Friday .
This exercise aimed to enhance readiness for emergency situations like floods and landslides, particularly in high-risk areas.
The drill saw active participation from various quick response teams, including those from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Police, Home Guard, Revenue, Fire, and Health Departments.
These teams conducted simulated relief and rescue operations, addressing hypothetical disaster scenarios at key locations such as the T-Dong Power Project, Pawari’s labor colony, and Nathpa.
The exercise simulated a range of emergency situations: a flood triggered by the bursting of a glacier lake at the T-Dong Power Project, a flood affecting the labor colony in Pawari, and a landslide in Nathpa.
Quick response teams were mobilized to carry out rescue operations, with ambulances from the Health Department and buses from the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) deployed for the prompt evacuation of injured and stranded individuals.
A relief and rescue camp was established by the Revenue Department to assess the damage and provide necessary aid. Incident Commander and Assistant Commissioner of Kinnaur, Vijay Kumar, emphasized the importance of constant preparedness and community awareness to effectively manage emergencies.
“This mock drill is crucial for ensuring our teams and the public are well-prepared for actual disasters,” he stated.
The event was attended by several key officials, including ITBP officers, Commandant Home Guard Pankaj Sharma, District Health Officer Dr. Kaviraj Negi, and Regional Manager HRTC Piyush Sharma, along with other officers and employees.
Motivated by the devastating impact of the previous monsoon season, which caused significant loss of life and property in Himachal Pradesh, Kinnaur and other vulnerable districts are gearing up for the impending monsoon rains.
