Shimla, May 3
The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert of thunderstorms, lightning, hailstorm & gusty winds (wind speed 30-40 knots per hour) likely at isolated places over plains, low & mid-hills. They have said that thunderstorms & lightning are likely at remote places over high hills on Tuesday and Wednesday. According to the alert issued, Chamba, Kangra, and Mandi are likely to have rain, thunderstorms, lightning and windstorm on May 3 and 4. A yellow warning has also been issued for hailstorms and strong winds in Sirmaur and Solan.
An advisory is also issued about damage that may occur to standing crops, fruit plants and new plantations due to hailstorms and gusty winds. Farmers are directed to take adequate safety measures. Use hail nets to avoid damage from a hailstorm. Proper ventilation system should be maintained in sheds. Vegetable nurseries and crops may be thatched with grass and ploy sheets. Ensure drainage in the vegetable fields, and New plantings may be thatched with grass and poly sheets to avoid the direct influence of thunderstorms or lightning, the Met Office warned.
However, the bright side of this gusty windy wet spell is that mercury has plummeted in the entire state. This rain/hail is expected to bring relief from the severe sweltering heatwave. Besides bringing good luck, even the number of forest fires running live are expected to douse down now. This will also bring cheers among those in the tourism sector. The forecast of pleasant weather in Himachal would attract people to enjoy the summer season in a cold climate.
On Monday, Mercury plummeted by three to four degrees in the state. At the same time, due to rain in the coming days, the temperature is likely to decrease further.
