Shimla, July 8,
A mysterious disease rapidly spreading across apple orchards in Himachal Pradesh has raised serious concerns among fruit growers. In response, Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has directed immediate scientific investigation into the outbreak, which is causing significant damage to crops.
A delegation of apple growers met the Chief Minister today and informed him about the emergence of the unidentified disease that is affecting the health of apple trees. According to the growers, the disease is causing premature yellowing and shedding of leaves, resulting in a drastic decline in apple production this season.
Taking prompt cognizance of the matter, the Chief Minister spoke over the phone with the Vice-Chancellor of Dr. Y.S. Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni (Solan), and instructed the university to deploy expert teams to the affected areas without delay. He emphasized the need for a scientific diagnosis and ground-level education for farmers to implement effective control and prevention measures.
Expressing deep concern over the economic losses faced by horticulturists, CM Sukhu said the disease is spreading swiftly and poses a serious threat to the livelihoods of thousands of families dependent on apple farming. He has asked the university to submit a comprehensive report to the state government within seven days so that timely and effective measures can be taken.
“The government is committed to resolving the problems of farmers and fruit producers on a priority basis. All necessary support will be provided,” said the Chief Minister, underlining the critical role of apple production in the state’s economy.
