Shimla, July 25,
A 72-year-old woman died at Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMC) Shimla early Friday morning, triggering allegations of medical negligence from her family. However, hospital authorities have issued a press statement denying any lapse in care and attributing her death to a heart attack and complications from blood cancer.
According to the official statement from IGMC’s Medical Superintendent, Dr Rahul Rau the patient, Sev Dasi, was brought to the emergency department at 5:33 a.m. after being referred from Nerchowk Medical College.
She was suffering from inflammation in the liver and spleen, blood cancer, and cardiac issues. She had already been given initial treatment for a heart attack at Nerchowk before being referred to IGMC.
Upon arrival at IGMC, she was promptly examined, relevant tests were conducted, and necessary treatment was started immediately, the hospital said. As her condition deteriorated, she was shifted to the Coronary Care Unit (CCU), where she passed away at 7:51 a.m. The official cause of death has been stated as heart attack and complications related to blood cancer.
Earlier to this clarification patient’s son, Liladhar Chauhan, went live on FB shortly after her death, accusing the attending doctors of negligence. He alleged that his mother was not attended to in a timely manner and claimed that medical intervention began only after he started broadcasting the video.
The incident has once again raised questions over patient care at the state’s premier health institution, which handles critical cases from across Himachal Pradesh.
IGMC authorities have confirmed that a complaint has been received and the matter is under investigation. A more detailed statement will be released following the inquiry.
