Shimla, Dec 10,
The Government of Himachal Pradesh has initiated efforts to revise and finalize the vacation schedule for government schools across the state. The Education Department has circulated a draft schedule and guidelines to gather feedback from stakeholders, including parents, students, teachers, and district authorities. The proposed framework, along with detailed instructions, has been shared through a notification issued by Sunil Verma, Joint Secretary (Education) to the Government of Himachal Pradesh.
The revised schedule divides schools into two categories as Summer Closing Schools and Winter Closing Schools.
The classification will be determined by the respective Directors of Higher and Elementary Education. A total of 52 vacation days has been proposed for each category, with adjustments to account for diverse climatic conditions across districts.
For Summer Closing Schools, the schedule proposes 40 days of summer and monsoon breaks, with durations to be notified by Deputy Commissioners (DCs) based on prevailing weather conditions. Additionally, a winter break of 7 days and a festival break of 5 days have been outlined.
For Winter Closing Schools, the major vacation will be the winter break of 42 days, running from January 1 to February 11. This is supplemented by a monsoon/climatic exigency break of 7 days and a festival break of 3 days.
Deputy Commissioners will play a pivotal role in implementing the schedule, with the authority to adjust break durations and declare holidays in response to local weather conditions. They can also split vacations into multiple intervals to better suit the region’s needs. For instance, the monsoon break of 7 days can be distributed into smaller periods as required. This flexibility ensures minimal disruption to the academic calendar.
Deputy Directors of Higher Education, in consultation with their Elementary Education counterparts, are tasked with proposing vacation dates to the DCs. Exceptional weather circumstances may warrant an extension of vacation periods, which will remain under DCs’ discretion.
The government has requested feedback on the draft schedule by January 15, 2025. Stakeholders are encouraged to share their opinions to help finalize the schedule effectively. By incorporating diverse perspectives, the government aims to establish a balanced and adaptive vacation plan that addresses both educational and climatic needs.
