Himachal Pradesh braces itself for the impact of a fresh active Western Disturbance, set to arrive on 12th April 2024.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange alert and made forecast indicating a significant increase in precipitation activity across the state from 13th to 15th April 2024.
Residents could anticipate a mix of light to moderate rainfall and snowfall during this period, with certain regions experiencing isolated spells of heavy precipitation, particularly in Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, and Chamba on the 14th of April.
The peak intensity of these heavy spells is expected to coincide with this date, urging caution and preparedness among the local populace.
Accompanying the anticipated precipitation are additional weather elements that demand attention. Thunderstorms, lightning, hailstorms, and gusty winds with speeds ranging from 40 to 50 kmph are forecasted, posing potential risks to the plains, low hills, and mid-hill districts of the state. .
These elements of nature could increase the weather vagaries and may have diverse impacts, ranging from disruptions in daily life to hazards for agriculture and infrastructure.
Consequently, residents are advised to take necessary precautions to mitigate these risks.
The weather forecast also indicates a deviation from the norm in temperature patterns during this period.
Average minimum temperatures are expected to be normal to below normal, while maximum temperatures are likely to remain below the usual range.
This shift in temperature, combined with the precipitation and accompanying elements, creates a unique weather scenario for Himachal Pradesh.
The anticipated weather conditions carry various implications for residents, travelers, and the state’s infrastructure.
The IMD’s advisory highlights potential impacts such as disruptions in electricity, landslides, rockfalls, and mudslides leading to blockages of roads, highways, bridges, and waterways.
Furthermore, there is a risk of traffic flow disruption and damage to plantations, horticulture, and standing crops due to strong winds and hail. The possibility of injuries to individuals and livestock in open areas due to hail also warrants caution.
In response to these forecasts and potential impacts, the IMD has provided a series of actionable suggestions to enhance safety and preparedness.
Residents are advised to avoid roadway underpasses, drainage ditches, low-lying areas, and places prone to flooding. It is crucial to stay away from power lines and electrical wires, unplugging electrical appliances to prevent damage.
Caution is advised while driving, with an emphasis on staying indoors, closing windows and doors, and minimizing travel whenever possible.
Seeking safe shelters and refraining from taking cover under trees during thunderstorms are additional precautions recommended by the IMD.
