Shimla, Sept 23,
In the past few days, concerns have been raised about the authenticity of Aadhaar cards being used by migrants in Himachal Pradesh, particularly in Kotkhai. These concerns were brought to the attention of the local police by the Pradhan of Beopar Mandal Gumma, who alleged that some migrants from other states were using fake Aadhaar cards as identification documents.
In response, the Shimla district police undertook a thorough verification process across various police stations. SP Shimla Sanjeev Gandhi informed that specifically, at Kotkhai Police Station, the Aadhaar details of 75 migrants were collected. Biometric verification of all these individuals was conducted at the Lok Mitra Kendra, a local public service center. The results confirmed that all Aadhaar cards were original and authentic.
He said that the only inconsistency found during the verification process was related to the date of birth on some Aadhaar cards. This was identified as a technical issue within the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) system from the early years of its implementation in 2010. The UIDAI clarified the matter, stating that minor discrepancies in dates of birth during the initial rollout of Aadhaar are not uncommon and do not affect the overall authenticity of the documents.
Addressing the concerns, the SP stated that the recent rumors of duplicate or fake Aadhaar cards being used by migrant workers and vendors were baseless. “There is no truth in the allegations circulating on social media. All Aadhaar cards checked in the Shimla district were found to be genuine,” the spokesperson said.
The police also emphasized that it is not unusual for individuals to share the same date of birth, which can sometimes lead to confusion. The spread of misinformation on social media, including claims about migrants using fraudulent documents, appears to be part of a misleading campaign against minority communities in the region. The police urged people not to fall for such divisive narratives, highlighting that illegal constructions in the state are a concern across all communities, not just among migrants or minorities.
With this thorough verification process, the Shimla police have effectively put to rest the speculation and rumors surrounding the authenticity of Aadhaar cards used by migrant workers in the area.
