In recognition for exceptional courage during a critical security incident, Police Security Officer (PSO) Constable Sanjeev Kumar has been recommended for the prestigious Police Medal for Gallantry (PMG). The Himachal Pradesh Police has decided to propose his name for the National honour following his brave actions during the firing incident involving former MLA Bumber Thakur, stated a police spokesperson.

The IPS Association, Himachal Pradesh Chapter, has lauded Constable Sanjeev Kumar’s valiant efforts in protecting lives under life-threatening circumstances. Acknowledging his bravery, the Association has extended financial support of ₹25,000 for his immediate medical treatment and recovery.
Constable Sanjeev Kumar’s timely intervention and unwavering commitment ensured public safety during the high-risk situation. His courageous actions reflect the highest standards of professionalism in law enforcement, they stated.
On March 14, this year unidentified assailants opened fire at Bamber Thakur’s residence while he was celebrating Holi with his supporters. Around 12 rounds were fired, injuring Thakur, his PSO Sanjeev Kumar, and supporter Vishal Sharma.

Thakur sustained a bullet wound to the thigh. Sanjeev Kumar suffered multiple gunshot wounds in the leg, back, and thigh. Vishal Sharma received pellet injuries while trying to protect Thakur.
A spokesperson of the Himachal Pradesh Police said that the department will formally submit the recommendation to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) for consideration. Further updates regarding the award nomination process will be shared in due course.
