The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Himachal Pradesh for the next 12 hours, from 2100 hours on April 20 to 0900 hours on April 21, 2025. According to the latest satellite and radar data, light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 45-55 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph, is very likely at isolated places in Chamba, Kangra, Mandi, Kullu, Hamirpur and Shimla districts. Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti districts are expected to receive light to moderate precipitation with gusty winds in the range of 35-45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph, and a few heavy spells of rain. Other districts may witness light rain at isolated places during the same period.

The IMD has placed the state under a red alert category, urging caution.
“Convective cells are persisting with very slow movement over *Mandi, Bilaspur and adjoining Shimla & Solan* districts,” stated a updated by IMD. Adding, ” It most likely to lead to severe weather over the regions especially strong winds (60-70 kmph gusting to 80 kmph), Hailstorm and moderate spells of rain with few intense spells”, they informed.
There are chances of damage due to gusty winds, including flying debris such as weak hoardings and rooftops. People are advised to take shelter next to buildings or under safe cover and stay away from roadways, train tracks and rooftops without adequate railings.
Heavy rain may also lead to localized landslides or mudslides in vulnerable regions, waterlogging in low-lying areas, partial damage to weak structures and slippery roads increasing the risk of vehicle skidding.
Thunderstorm and lightning advisories include staying indoors, avoiding travel, keeping away from tall trees, and unplugging electrical and electronic appliances.
The IMD has advised the public to remain alert, follow all safety measures, and stay updated through official channels.
