Shimla, July 24,
A fresh case of scrub typhus has been reported in the state capital, with a 32-year-old woman testing positive for the disease. According to a medical bulletin issued today by the Senior Medical Superintendent of Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) Shimla, Rahul Rau, a total of eight samples were sent for testing, out of which one tested positive.
Scrub typhus, a seasonal vector-borne disease, is caused by the bite of infected chigger mites. It can lead to high fever, headache, body pain, and rashes, and if not treated on time, it may result in serious complications.
Health authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant, especially during the monsoon season when cases of scrub typhus tend to rise due to increased vegetation and damp conditions. People are advised to avoid sitting or lying directly on grass and weeds, wear full-sleeved clothing, and use insect repellents while venturing into fields or gardens. They should also keep their surroundings clean and free from excessive grass or bushes. Immediate medical attention is necessary if symptoms like fever, rash, or body pain appear.
