SDM Social Media Controversy Shimla: Govt orders inquiry into Urban SDM’s online posts
Shimla, Feb 28,
A serving Shimla Urban Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) has come under official scrutiny following allegations that her social media activity may have crossed into prohibited commercial promotion, prompting the state government to order a formal inquiry.
The controversy centres around certain posts and videos shared on her personal social media handles, which allegedly showcased and promoted products of a private company. The issue gained traction after these posts were widely circulated and questioned by sections of the public and media.

Taking cognisance, the state’s Chief Secretary has directed a probe to examine whether the activity violates provisions of the Civil Services Conduct Rules, particularly those restricting government servants from engaging in commercial or profit-oriented associations without prior approval.
Officials indicated that the inquiry will determine whether there was any direct or indirect commercial benefit involved and whether the content amounted to endorsement of a private entity while holding public office.
The development has also triggered a broader debate on the growing social media presence of public officials. The Shimla Urban SDM (female officer), who has a significant following across platforms, has been consistently active online. Observers point out that her digital footprint includes frequent posts—often multiple updates a day—many of which are not directly linked to administrative work or public service communication.
While there is no official confirmation of monetisation or financial gain, the frequency and nature of content have raised questions about the fine line between personal expression and professional conduct in public office.
Sources further indicate that at least one of the contentious posts has since been removed following the backlash, even as the matter continues to remain under examination.
Notably, service conduct rules bar government officers from participating in trade, business, or endorsements that may compromise the neutrality and integrity of their position. The outcome of the inquiry is expected to determine whether any breach has occurred and if disciplinary action is warranted.
As of now, the officer has not issued any formal public response on the allegations.
