Shimla police digs out 10 bigha illicit cannabis farm
Shimla, Jul 6,
Shimla Police has unearthed a large-scale illegal cannabis cultivation spread over about 10 bighas of land in the Kofardhar (Nagah) area of Chopal subdivision, destroying an estimated one million cannabis plants during a special anti-drug operation.
According to the police, a team from Nerwa Police Station, while on routine patrol on July 5, detected illegal cannabis cultivation in the remote Kofardhar (Nagah) area. Following the discovery, officials from the Revenue and Forest departments were called to the spot and the operation was carried out in accordance with the prescribed legal procedures.
A preliminary inspection found cannabis being cultivated over nearly 10 bighas of land. Police said around 5,000 cannabis plants were found growing in a single bigha, leading officials to estimate that nearly one million cannabis plants had been illegally cultivated across the entire area.
As required under the provisions of the law, police collected and seized samples of 40 cannabis plants from different locations as evidence. After completing the necessary legal formalities, the remaining standing cannabis crop was destroyed on the spot in the presence of the concerned officials.
Police have registered a case at Nerwa Police Station under Case No. 34 of 2026 under Sections 20, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act against unknown persons.
Officials said the operation forms part of Shimla Police’s ongoing campaign against narcotics and illegal cultivation of cannabis in the district. They added that efforts are underway to identify those responsible for cultivating the prohibited crop.
The police said the investigation is in progress and assured that all persons found involved in the illegal cultivation would face strict legal action under the provisions of the NDPS Act. The authorities also appealed to local residents to share information about narcotics-related activities to help curb the menace of drug cultivation and trafficking in the region.
