Shimla to build the World’s Second Longest, India’s and Asia’s First ropeway connecting 15 stations over 13.79 kilometers

Himachal Pradesh is set to construct a 13.79-kilometer ropeway in capital Shimla, making it the world’s second longest and the first in India and Asia to connect 15 stations. This ambitious project, costing ₹1734.40 crore, is poised to transform urban transportation in the region.
The ropeway will include stations at various key locations: Tara Devi, Chakkar Court, Tutikandi Parking, New ISBT, 103 Tunnel, Railway Station, Victory Tunnel, Old Bus Stand, Lakkar Bazaar, IGMC, Sanjauli, Navbahar, Secretariat, and near the Lift.
The ₹1734.40 crore project is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion in Shimla.
Initially, the ropeway will have a capacity of transporting 1,000 people per hour in each direction, which will increase to 3,000 people per hour by 2059. The ropeway will cover an area of 60 kilometers. Solar panels will be installed on gondolas and at stations to harness maximum solar energy.
Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri announced this development at a symposium on innovative urban transportation through ropeways held at Hotel Holiday Home. He emphasized that Himachal Pradesh is swiftly establishing itself as a leader in ropeway projects, setting an example for other Indian states.
Agnihotri stated, “It is a matter of pride that Himachalis are playing a crucial role in developing international-standard ropeways in the state. Himachal Pradesh aims to create a network of ropeways similar to those in Switzerland and Austria. While Europe boasts around 25,000 ropeway projects, India has only about 20. However, the number of ropeways in Himachal Pradesh is steadily increasing.”
The construction of the Shimla ropeway is set to commence on March 1, 2025. All necessary documents for FCA approval were uploaded to the Parivesh portal on April 1, 2024. The proposed routes are named Monal Line, Devdar Line, and Apple Line. A fact-finding mission by the New Development Bank (NDB) inspected the project from June 2 to June 10, 2024, and the concept note received approval on July 12, 2024. The project is scheduled for presentation at the NDB Board meeting in December for final approval. Following a tripartite agreement, tenders will be awarded, and construction will begin on March 1, 2025.
Talking about it, Chief Parliamentary Secretary Sunder Singh Thakur highlighted the environmental benefits of the ropeway, noting that it will help alleviate traffic congestion and boost tourism.
Agnihotri also underscored the government’s commitment to green initiatives, with six green corridors being developed in the state. The state government will bear 20% of the cost of the Shimla ropeway project. He praised the local MLA and Municipal Corporation Mayor for their efforts in making this project a reality.
Principal Secretary of Transport RD Nazim announced that Himachal Pradesh aims to become a clean and green state by March 31, 2026. The Tara Devi to Shimla ropeway will receive financial support from the state government and NDB, with 80% of the funding from NDB and 20% from the state government.
The ropeway will feature different fare structures for locals and tourists to ensure affordability for residents. Detailed discussions are ongoing to finalize the fare rates without imposing an additional burden on the public.
After coming to light, this ropeway project will be a landmark achievement for Himachal Pradesh, significantly enhancing urban transportation and promoting sustainable development.
