Shimla, Oct 24,
Shimla’s Traffic Woes will ease with India’s longest new ropeway project. Also Central and State government both are supporting the project with the best possible efforts, claimed Mukesh Agnihotri Deputy Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh . In a media conference here today, he stated that Himachal Pradesh is set to witness a transformation in its transport infrastructure with the upcoming construction of India’s longest and World’ second longest ropeway in Shimla. The 14-kilometer-long project is being built at a cost of Rs 1,734 crore.
Designed to ease traffic congestion in Shimla, the ropeway will have 13 stations, including key locations such as Taradevi, Chakkar, Railway Station, and Sanjauli. Once operational, it will carry up to 6,000 passengers per hour in 660 trolleys.

This eco-friendly, green project is expected to revolutionize local transportation while promoting tourism. Agnihotri emphasized the significance of the project in alleviating traffic jams that plague Shimla, especially during the tourist and apple seasons.
The ropeway is being built with the support of the New Development Bank (NDB), with Himachal Pradesh holding 20% equity in the project. Additionally, the ropeway will have three lines—red, green, and blue—to facilitate smooth travel.
The first phase is expected to be completed within three years. However, the exact period of time, when the project will be dedicated to public remains unknown. “We will ensure maximum progress in this project work, till we are in government,” claimed the Dy CM.
On a question about most such projects being delayed due to FCA clearances, etc, Agnihotri assured that in this case it may not happen, as advances for environmental clearances have already been deposited and hopefully clearances will also arrive in the projected time frame, he stated.
“A big dream will turn into reality at Shimla,” stated Agnihotri.
Looking ahead, Agnihotri highlighted the on November 5 next month, the Baglamukhi temple ropeway is ready for inauguration. “Also we are committed to begin work on Bijli Mahadev Ropeway in Kullu soon” , he added
He stated that state’s ambition to further enhance connectivity by constructing a 39-kilometer ropeway with 6 stations from Parwanoo to Shimla, which would become the longest in the world.
With a projected cost of Rs 6,600 crore, the Ropeway Development Corporation is actively working on this initiative under a public-private partnership model, he claimed.
