Shimla,, Jan 23,
As the white mantle comes down on the land of Himachal Pradesh, social media seemed abuzz with greeting messages. Particularly significant as ir was a year after that capital Shimla had witnessed snow.
This year’s fall becomes even more special as it comes after a dry span of almost 3 months. Noteworthy that Shimla did not even record a drop of water since October 2025 as the district’s November December deficits remained around 99 percent till this morning of 23rd January when the city and district woke up to a white morning.
But of course snow brings cheers for farmers and citizens alike but also other issues like closure of road, transport in certain areas. Even though the authorities haven’t issued data’s on amount of snow recorded so far in different areas of Shimla and other parts of Himachal but road closures have been notified.
According to information shared by the District Public Relations Officer (DPRO), Shimla, snowfall has started in Chopal, leading to the closure of the Chopal–Deha main road. An advisory has been issued asking commuters not to travel on this route until weather conditions improve. Power supply has been disrupted in Chopal subdivision, though water supply remains normal so far.
Snowfall has also been reported in the higher reaches of Sarahan, Taklech, Nankhari and Rampur, while Narkanda recorded fresh snowfall in the morning hours.
Officials said that due to heavy snowfall on the Deha–Chopal road, the stretch has been closed for all types of vehicles. Around half a foot of snow has accumulated near Chambi, further hampering vehicular movement.
While the snowfall has brought cheer to farmers, orchardists and residents hoping for groundwater recharge, authorities said road clearance operations would be taken up once weather conditions stabilise.
Official data on the exact amount of snowfall recorded across different parts of Shimla district is still awaited.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the ongoing weather activity is likely to continue over the next 24 to 48 hours under the influence of a western disturbance. Light to moderate snowfall is expected in the higher reaches of Shimla district and adjoining areas, while intermittent rain and snow may occur in mid-hill regions. The IMD has cautioned that road conditions could remain slippery in snow-bound areas and visibility may reduce at times, advising residents and tourists to follow official advisories and avoid unnecessary travel until the weather stabilises.
