Shimla, Dec 12,
The second Shimla Winter Carnival, starting from December 24, will see the heritage scenic Ridge ground transformed into a vibrant marketplace for ten days. Reportedly the Municipal Corporation has approved the setting up of around 50 stalls, prioritizing local traders in the allotment process.
Applications for stall allotments are now open and can be submitted at the Municipal Corporation office until December 14. To avoid last year’s controversy over non-local traders being favored, this year, local businesses will receive priority. Applications will be thoroughly vetted, and if demand exceeds the number of stalls, a lottery system will be used to determine allotments, stated a report.
Stall regulations and rent
Strict guidelines have been issued regarding permissible goods. Hosiery items like clothes and shoes, as well as several food products, will not be allowed for sale. The rent for a stall has been set at ₹5,000 per day, totaling ₹50,000 for the ten-day event. The Municipal Corporation is finalizing locations on the Ridge to ensure proper arrangements.
MC Shimla’s initiative
Municipal Corporation officials stated, “Local businessmen shall be given priority in stall allotment, and their registrations will be verified.” They added that the Ridge stalls are essential to attract visitors and enhance the Winter Carnival experience.
Previous controversy
Last year’s event faced backlash when traders from other states were permitted to set up stalls, sidelining local businessmen. To prevent a repeat of such disputes, the Corporation has taken deliberate steps this year to ensure fairness and transparency in the allotment process.
The Winter Carnival promises to be a significant attraction for tourists and residents alike, blending business opportunities with festive celebrations in Shimla’s iconic Ridge ground.
