In a determined effort to bolster road safety, the Himachal Pradesh Police has launched a special week-long campaign targeting drunk driving. This campaign, spearheaded by Director General of Police Dr. Atul Verma, will run from September 23 to September 29, 2024, and aims to curb the increasing number of road accidents occurring during late evening hours, primarily between 9 PM and 11:30 PM.
Narvir Singh Rathore. Additional SP informed that the Traffic Tourist and Railway Unit in Shimla has reported a troubling rise in road accidents, many of which are linked to intoxicated drivers. Recent data shows that, in 2024 alone, the Himachal Pradesh Police has recommended the suspension or cancellation of 2,345 driving licenses due to severe violations, with around 1,400 of these cases involving drunk driving.
Rathore, highlighted that the police are committed to enhancing enforcement through advanced technology. The Police Headquarters in Shimla is closely supervising the road safety enforcement plan and has urged field officers to utilize digital devices for efficient traffic regulation.
As part of this crackdown, motorists caught driving under the influence should be prepared to face the consequences, including the immediate suspension or cancellation of their driving licenses. The Himachal Pradesh Police continues to stress the importance of responsible driving, urging all road users to prioritize safety.
This initiative comes in the wake of growing concerns about the state’s road safety, as authorities seek to reduce the number of avoidable accidents and ensure safer travel for residents and tourists alike.
