Shimla, July 22,
In a historic and environmentally conscious move, Rashtrapati Niwas Chharabra has decided to serve Dham to visiting students in plates made from green taur leaf aka ‘Pattal’ and ‘Dunna’. This decision, was announced during a meeting chaired by Deputy Commissioner Shimla Anupam Kashyap, aligns with the district administration’s broader initiative to promote sustainable practices.
During the meeting, officials from the President’s residence and district administration discussed various issues related to Rashtrapati Niwas Chharabra. They appreciated the ongoing initiative of serving langar in ‘taur’ leaves at local temples and proposed extending this practice to schoolchildren visiting the President’s residence. This change aims to reduce environmental impact and support local economies. The Deputy Commissioner emphasized that self-help groups will produce these plates, benefiting the women involved in these groups economically.
Sanju Dogra, Manager of Rashtrapati Niwas Chharabra, explained that until now, food for visiting school children was served in paper plates. Switching to taur leaf plates will offer an eco-friendly alternative that is easy to dispose of and environmentally safe.
In addition to this initiative, the Deputy Commissioner directed efforts to ensure that all children from child care institutes visit the President’s residence within the next 15 days. Recognizing these children as “Children of the State,” the government aims to integrate them into mainstream society through such initiatives.

The meeting also addressed the need to cut down dangerous dry trees near the President’s residence for public safety. The Deputy Commissioner instructed the Sub-Divisional Magistrate Shimla Rural and Forest Department officials to expedite this task.
Moreover, the Public Works Department has been directed to install signage and convex mirrors for road safety from Shimla to Rashtrapati Niwas at Dhali Chowk. Plans to widen the road from Chharabra Chowk to Gate No. 1 were also discussed.
