Theog admin. orders closure of educational institutions amid heavy rain alert

Acting under the powers recently delegated by the Himachal Pradesh Government under the Disaster Management Act, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Theog, on Tuesday ordered the closure of all government and private educational institutions in the subdivision in view of adverse weather conditions and safety concerns.
According to an order issued by SDM Dr. Shashank Gupta, all government and private schools, colleges, Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and Anganwadi centres in Sub-Division Theog remained closed on July 21. The closure also applied to teaching and non-teaching staff of the institutions.
The administration said the decision was taken after moderate rainfall in the area led to road blockages and disrupted transportation. The Public Works Department (PWD) reported that 16 roads in the subdivision remained closed due to the prevailing weather conditions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also forecast continued rainfall throughout the day, raising concerns over the safe movement of students.
The SDM stated that the order had been issued in the interest of public safety and to prevent inconvenience caused by affected road connectivity. Heads of all educational institutions have been directed to ensure strict compliance with the order.
The notification assumes significance as the Himachal Pradesh Government has recently authorised Deputy Commissioners and Sub-Divisional Magistrates to declare holidays in educational institutions and certain government offices under the Disaster Management Act whenever weather conditions or other emergencies pose a threat to public safety.
With the IMD issuing a heavy to very heavy rainfall alert for parts of Shimla district, including Theog subdivision, the local administration invoked these powers to minimise risks arising from the ongoing monsoon and ensure the safety of students and staff.
