NHPC releases additional water from Parbati-II dam, advisory issued for public safety

NHPC has issued a public advisory warning residents, tourists and workers to stay away from the banks of the Parbati River after deciding to release additional water from the radial gates of the Pulga Dam of the Parbati-II Power Station.
According to NHPC, around 39 cumecs of water will be released through the dam’s radial gates from 5:35 pm on Monday due to the continuous rise in the reservoir level and the possibility of further heavy inflows. With the additional release, the total discharge into the Parbati River, including the mandatory environmental flow, is expected to increase to around 174 cumecs.
The authorities cautioned that if inflows into the reservoir continue to rise, more water may be released from the dam, leading to a further increase in the river’s water level.
NHPC has appealed to the general public, tourists, labourers and local residents not to venture near the river during this period. Hotel, guest house, homestay and campsite operators, as well as taxi drivers, have also been requested to advise visitors to maintain a safe distance from the riverbanks.
As part of the safety measures, hooters and sirens will be sounded before and during the release of water. Public address vehicles will also be deployed in nearby areas to alert people about the rising water level.
