Shimla, June 25
Himachal Pradesh Police have reported the death of a 50-year-old pilgrim from Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, who slipped on snow during the Shrikhand Kailash Yatra. The deceased, identified as Vinay Verma, embarked on the challenging pilgrimage ahead of the official start date.
According to DySP Ani Chandrashekhar Kayth, Verma slipped near Shrikhand on June 19, falling approximately 200-250 meters down a snowy slope. His brother, Sandeep Verma, confirmed the incident, stating that local residents are assisting in transporting the body to Jaon, from where it will be moved to Nirmand Hospital for further proceedings.
This incident marks the third death in the Shrikhand Yatra this year. Despite the pilgrimage being officially scheduled from July 14 to 27, some devotees have already begun their ascent, ignoring administration instructions and risking hazardous conditions.
The Shrikhand Mahadev Yatra is known for its extreme difficulty and challenges, making it one of the toughest pilgrimages in North India. This year’s journey is especially dangerous due to excessive snow, contributing to the recent fatalities.
Authorities continue to urge pilgrims to follow the official schedule and adhere to safety guidelines to prevent further tragedies. As the Yatra’s start date approaches, ensuring the safety of the devotees remains a top priority.
