Shimla/ Chandigarh, Sept 2,
A chilling case of kidnapping and murder with links to the Pakistan-based terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) has surfaced following the arrest of three youths from Jammu and Kashmir by the Punjab Police. The incident involves Anil Kumar, a taxi driver from Nayagaon, Mohali district, originally from Jogindernagar, Himachal Pradesh.
Addressing the Himachal Pradesh Assembly, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu confirmed that Punjab Police, in coordination with the DGPs of Punjab and Haryana, had established that Anil Kumar was abducted and killed. An FIR No. 87 dated August 31, 2025, has been registered under Sections 140(3) and 304 IPC at Police Station Mataur, Mohali.
Three accused — Sahil Bashir, Munish Singh alias Ansh, and Ejaz Ahmed alias Wasim — have been apprehended by special police teams with support from Gurdaspur Police. Authorities have recovered the victim’s body, the taxi, and a .32 bore pistol used in the crime. The accused have reportedly confessed to their involvement.
Chief Minister Sukhu stressed, “The government wants to make it clear that in cases of such heinous crimes, immediate and strict action with the support of state police is our top priority.”
Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav stated that the arrested individuals were overground operatives of JeM. Sahil Bashir was already wanted under UAPA and Arms Act cases, while his brother Ejaz Ahmed had prior arrests involving weapons. Both were reportedly active for the terror group across Punjab and neighbouring states.
According to police reports, Anil Kumar left home for Chandigarh railway station late Friday night but did not return. CCTV footage later traced his taxi at Kurali toll plaza around 11:45 pm with unidentified men on board, and subsequently near Bahram toll plaza past 1 am. The victim’s body and vehicle were recovered from separate locations following disclosures by the accused.
Punjab Police are continuing intensive investigations to dismantle the JeM-linked terror network behind the murder.
