In a tragic incident on Thursday, three schoolgirls lost their lives after drowning in a ravine at Balh Panchayat under the Bangana development block.
According to eyewitnesses, the girls had gone near the ravine in the afternoon but did not return home till evening. Worried family members launched a search and found a slipper lying near the edge of the ravine. Soon after, villagers spotted the bodies of two girls floating on the water’s surface. All three were pulled out and rushed to the Community Health Centre, Thanakalan, where doctors declared them brought dead.
The deceased were identified as Khushi, daughter of Manjeet, along with Komal and Sonakshi, daughters of Ajay Kumar. All three were students of Government School, Sanhal, studying in classes VII and VIII.
Villagers said one of the girls slipped into the water, and in an attempt to rescue her, the other two also jumped in. However, none of them could swim out of the deep water. Following the incident, the bodies were sent to the district hospital for post-mortem examination.
Reports said Khushi’s father, Manjit Ram, works as a driver and owns a tractor and a jeep, while the families of Komal and Sonakshi hail from Lidkot.
The incident has cast a pall of grief over the area, with villagers expressing shock at the untimely demise of the three young students.
