Kangra/Shimla, July 14
A mild earthquake measuring 3.6 on the Richter scale struck the Kangra Valley at 1427 hrs on Saturday, sending residents rushing out of their homes in panic. The epicenter was pinpointed in Kangra, with a latitude of 32.27 North and a longitude of 76.19 East, at a depth of 5 kilometers.
The tremor, though brief, was felt across the entire valley, including Palampur, Dharamshala, and Shahapur. Despite the widespread alarm, officials confirmed that there were no reports of casualties or property damage.
Kangra Valley, situated in seismic Zone V, is no stranger to earthquakes. The memory of the devastating earthquake on April 4, 1905, which claimed 10,527 lives and caused massive destruction, looms large. Saturday’s quake, while minor, served as a stark reminder of the region’s vulnerability to seismic activity.
As the tremors subsided, life in the valley gradually returned to normal. However, the incident has reignited discussions on the need for enhanced preparedness and resilient infrastructure to mitigate the impact of future quakes.
