Shimla, May 8,
In a brazen act of deception, a Solan resident has been defrauded of ₹1 crore in cash and two cheques, each valued at ₹7.5 crore, under the pretence of a lucrative land transaction intended for the development of a hospital and a Gurudwara.
Following the lodging of a formal complaint, police apprehended three principal suspects in Dehradun and have secured a two-day police remand for further questioning.
Solan Superintendent of Police Gaurav Singh stated that the initial complaint was filed by Ashok Kumar, a resident of Skhelan, on July 28, 2024. According to the complaint, Tek Chand and Rajendra Singh, both from Kandaghat, introduced Kumar to Sanjay Gupta and Narendra. These individuals falsely claimed to be seeking to acquire 50 bighas of land in Kandaghat on behalf of Baba Malikyat Singh for the purpose of constructing a hospital and a Gurudwara. They allegedly proposed a ₹100 crore deal, involving the purchase of land from an individual named Asha Devi for ₹64 crore, promising Kumar a share of the profits.
Ashok Kumar was convinced to participate in the purported deal and agreed to assist in financing the land acquisition. On February 11, 2023, at his petrol station in Khandidhar, Rajneesh—the husband of the landowner Asha Devi—along with DD Modgil and Sunil Tripathi, reportedly arrived and urgently requested funds. Sanjay Gupta, Narendra, Sanjeev Garg, and others were also present. Under the guise of finalizing the agreement, they allegedly obtained ₹1 crore in cash and two post-dated cheques, each worth ₹7.5 crore, from Ashok Kumar.
Subsequent to receiving the funds, the accused individuals reportedly ceased all communication. The deposited cheques were later dishonoured. Furthermore, instead of proceeding with the promised land deal, the accused allegedly initiated a fabricated legal case in Delhi in an attempt to exert pressure on the victim.
Police investigations have since revealed that the accused had also defrauded a businessman from Dehradun of ₹3.80 crore. Authorities have also uncovered four prior cases of fraud and theft registered against the suspects in Dehradun and Jagadhri, Haryana.
The Sadar Police Station team successfully apprehended the three key accused individuals—Sanjay Kumar Gupta and Sanjeev Kumar Garg, both residents of Amar Vihar, Jagadhari, Yamunanagar, Haryana, and Malkiyat Singh, residing in Nada Sahib, Panchkula, Haryana—in Dehradun. They were presented before the court and subsequently remanded to police custody for further interrogation.
