Shimla, July 10,
After a prolonged wait, the Himachal Pradesh government has taken a significant step to restore the functioning of the State Commission for Women by appointing two non-official members. The Department of Social Justice and Empowerment issued a notification on yesterday, nominating Reena Devi of Bilaspur and Reena Daroch of Kangra as members for a three-year term or until the age of 65, whichever is earlier.
Reena Devi is a resident of Village Balhi Maretta, PO Jejwin, Tehsil Jhandutta in Bilaspur district, while Reena Daroch hails from VPO Nandpur Bhatoli, Tehsil Dehra in Kangra. Their appointments are expected to give the long-defunct Commission the necessary strength to resume hearings and address the rising number of pending complaints, especially those related to domestic violence.
The Commission had been largely inactive for over 30 months due to the absence of both a Chairperson and members.
While the appointment of Vidya Negi from Manali as Chairperson was made on June 20, 2025, the Commission was still incomplete without supporting members. With these two new appointments, the Commission is now expected to resume its mandate of safeguarding women’s rights and redressing grievances across the state.
The Commission regularly conducts outreach in various districts to hear women’s complaints locally and either resolve them through mediation or refer them to police and concerned departments for further action.
These appointments have been made under the provisions of the Himachal Pradesh State Commission for Women Act, 1996 and the rules framed in 1999 regarding service conditions, salaries, and allowances.
