Shimla, Dec 11,
The Congress-led state government’s two-year celebrations in Bilaspur highlighted its accomplishments while underscoring deep political and organizational challenges. Despite implementing its “five guarantees,” the government has faced a tumultuous journey marked by electoral setbacks, legal defeats, and internal discord.
The year began with a setback in the Rajya Sabha elections due to defections but rebounded with victories in four of six Vidhan Sabha bypolls. However, the loss of all four Lok Sabha seats dampened these gains. The government’s inability to address its financial crisis has drawn sharp criticism, with opposition leaders terming 2024 a year of increased inflation and public discontent. Controversial decisions, such as the “toilet tax,”increased utility bills, and stalled reforms in the water and power sectors, have only added to the public’s frustration. Even eatables like samosas because a bone of contention this year.
The government’s legal year was amiced bag. Troubles were prominent in the year including its loss in the High Court regarding the creation of Chief Parliamentary Secretary (CPS) posts. This decision not only undermined its authority but also embarrassed the administration, leaving questions about its ability to manage constitutional responsibilities effectively. However, not all court battles ended unfavorably. The government achieved a significant victory in its legal dispute with Oberoi Hotels, reclaiming control over the iconic Wildflower Hall, a major asset in its tourism sector. Yet another ongoing court battle remained aloud amidst people. About the 18 HPTDC hotels of the State, which got saved because of the State government’s proactive approach.
But the absence of key leaders at the celebrations further reflected organizational disarray. Notable absentees included former CPS appointees like Ram Kumar, Kishori Lal, and Nand Lal Bragta. Even though Congress state presidemt Pratibha Singh was there, but how good is a leader without team can be gauged as it is noteworthy that AICC has suspended all.office bearers committeess across the State. This definately has added to the impression of a fragmented party.
Deputy CM Mukesh Agnihotri defended the government’s tenure, dismissing opposition narratives and asserting its strength. However, the opposition’s critique of policy missteps and internal discord has found resonance.
As the government steps into its third year, it must address organizational weaknesses, navigate legal challenges, and prioritize delivering tangible results to regain public trust. The next three years will determine whether the administration can turn its narrative from controversy to competence.
