Shimla, Aug 23,
In an unusual event at Shimla’s iconic Ridge on Friday afternoon, a tourist from New Delhi was briefly detained by police after he scattered a bag containing currency notes in front of the Mahatma Gandhi statue.
The man was identified as Satish Kumar, son of Hargovind Khurana, and a resident of Delhi. The incident, which played out in full public view, drew the attention of locals and tourists before police intervened.
According to officials, passersby immediately alerted authorities after witnessing the act. A police team rushed to the spot, collected the notes amounting to Rs 19,000, and took Kumar to the local reporting room for questioning.
When asked why he had chosen to throw away currency in such a manner, Kumar reportedly told police, “I keep giving money like this. I was a little upset today, that’s why I threw the money.”
Officials clarified that though no malicious intent was found, the act constitutes an offence under laws prohibiting the destruction or disrespect of Indian currency. “We explained the legal consequences to him. He assured us that such an incident will not be repeated,” a police officer said.
After counselling and a formal warning, Kumar was allowed to leave, and the recovered cash was returned to him. Police described the episode as a rare case of public indiscretion, triggered by the mental agitation of the individual rather than deliberate criminal intent.
The Ridge, a heritage site and one of Shimla’s most visited spaces, has seldom witnessed such bizarre displays, making Friday’s incident a strikingly unusual one.
