Chamba, Sept 24,
A dramatic turn of events during the ongoing Ramlila in Chaugaon, Chamba, ended in tragedy when a veteran actor collapsed on stage and died of a heart attack while performing the role of King Dasharatha.
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening during the staging of Sita’s Swayamvara. As per eyewitnesses, a dialogue was underway between Dasharatha and Sage Vishwamitra when the actor, identified as Amresh Mahajan (73), fondly known as Shibu Bhai, suddenly collapsed. Moments earlier, he had delivered his line with a smile, saying, “I will sacrifice my life for you.” Seconds later, the audience watched in disbelief as he fell unconscious on the throne placed on stage.
The tragic moment was captured on live video, leaving the entire gathering shocked. Organisers and fellow artists rushed to his aid but could not revive him.
Mahajan, a senior member of the Mahajan family, had been associated with the Chamba Ramlila for nearly four decades. Known for his commanding presence and dedication, he had mentored several young artists who made their stage debut through this platform.
Chamba’s Chaugaon, a popular tourist destination, attracts visitors from across the country during the festive season. The Ramlila here is not only a cultural highlight but also a launchpad for hundreds of aspiring stage and film artists.
Locals and tourists alike mourned Mahajan’s sudden demise, remembering him as an artist who lived and died for the stage.
