Shimla, Augu 25
With the onset of the monsoon, cases of cold, cough, fever and other viral infections may increase, prompting the Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMC), Shimla, to advise people to remain alert, maintain hygiene and seek timely medical advice rather than panic.
Patients with symptoms of viral fever have been reaching IGMC, according to a press release issued by Dr Rahul Rao, senior medical superintendent, IGMC. The hospital administration said children, elderly people and those with pre-existing illnesses should be given special attention during the season.
Dr Rao said most cases of viral fever recover with proper care and medical advice. He appealed to people to avoid rumours and unnecessary fear and follow basic preventive measures.
The hospital advised people to cover their mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing and use a mask when necessary. Regular handwashing with soap and water, avoiding crowded places while suffering from fever, cough or cold, and maintaining an appropriate distance from others can help prevent the spread of infection.

If someone in a household develops a viral infection, direct contact with children and elderly members should be reduced. People have also been advised to take adequate fluids, nutritious food and sufficient rest.
The hospital advised those who get wet in the rain to change into dry clothes immediately and maintain personal hygiene. It also cautioned against taking antibiotics or other medicines without medical advice.
People should seek immediate medical attention in case of high or persistent fever, breathing difficulty, extreme weakness, continuous vomiting or any deterioration in their condition.
The hospital said that with proper care and timely medical consultation, most viral fever cases can be managed effectively, and urged the public to remain cautious without giving in to unnecessary anxiety.
