Wing Commander Ankit Sood, a distinguished pilot with the Mi-17-1V Helicopter Unit of the Indian Air Force, has been awarded the prestigious Vayu Sena Medal for Gallantry. The honor was conferred by President Droupadi Murmu in recognition of his extraordinary courage and exceptional service during the devastating floods that struck Himachal Pradesh in 2023.
In the face of unprecedented rainfall that wreaked havoc in Kullu and Mandi districts, Wing Commander Sood spearheaded critical rescue missions under highly adverse conditions. His swift and decisive actions saved countless lives, embodying the highest standards of bravery and dedication.
President Murmu, on the eve of the 76th Republic Day, approved gallantry awards for 93 Armed Forces and Central Armed Police Forces personnel, including 11 posthumous recognitions. Among these were two Kirti Chakras, 14 Shaurya Chakras, and eight Vayu Sena Medals for Gallantry, underscoring the unwavering commitment of India’s armed forces.
Additionally, the President sanctioned 305 defense decorations, including 30 Param Vishisht Seva Medals, 57 Ati Vishisht Seva Medals, and 15 Vayu Sena Medals for Devotion to Duty, among others. These awards celebrate the extraordinary service and dedication of Armed Forces personnel across the nation.
