10-Year-Old Atiqa Mir from J&K Races into F1 Academy history

Karting prodigy from Jammu & Kashmir, Atiqa Mir, at just 10 years old, has made history by becoming the first Indian and Asian to be signed by the Formula 1 Academy, joining its prestigious driver programme. This milestone highlights her rapid ascent in the world of motorsport, as the Academy has selected her for its “Discover Your Drive Programme” (DYD), recognizing her exceptional performances in karting.

Atiqa, hailing from Jammu and Kashmir, is one of only three drivers worldwide in the mini category (ages 8-11) to be included in the DYD programme. As part of this prestigious opportunity, she will represent the F1 Academy at the Champions of the Future Academy Programme Championship, competing across six rounds in Europe and the Middle East starting this weekend.

The F1 Academy, a female-only racing initiative owned by Formula 1, is committed to supporting Atiqa’s development by providing not only financial backing but also technical expertise, covering areas like fitness, driving, and mental preparation. Her inclusion in the programme is a significant step in her growing racing career, and she recognizes the importance of this opportunity.

“I’m incredibly excited about this announcement. Being chosen by the Formula 1 Academy is a huge honour, not just for me but for India as well,” said Atiqa to a news agency. “I’m determined to work hard, perform at my best, and honor the trust that Formula 1 Academy has placed in me. It’s a big encouragement for me, and I take great pride in representing my country.”

The F1 Academy, established by Formula 1, aims to develop and prepare female drivers for higher levels of single-seater racing. Under the guidance of Susie Wolff, a former racer and current managing director of the Academy, the initiative seeks to create meaningful change in motorsport by providing opportunities for talented female drivers to progress in competitive racing.

Susie Wolff emphasized the Academy’s commitment to action, stating, “We want to see more girls competing at the highest level of motorsport, and we must act to ensure that the most talented have the chance to move up the ranks.”

With her entry into the F1 Academy, Atiqa Mir joins an exclusive group of female racers who are determined to break new barriers in motorsports, paving the way for future generations.
